Winter Care for Curly Hair
Smart Cleansing – The first line of defense in keeping your curls in great condition during the winter months is by using a gentle cleanser on your hair and scalp. Be sure to use a cleanser that is free of sulfates and silicones. Many cleansers will rob your hair of the natural oils that are essential for keeping your hair in good health during the harsh winter months. My two “go-to” cleansers are DevaCurl No Poo and DevaCurl Decadence No Poo. They are both conditioning cleansers, which simply means they will not strip your hair while cleansing your scalp and hair. They add moisture to the hair while ridding your hair of buildup that blocks the hair from being properly nourished.
Moisturinzing – Conditioning your hair is one of the most important steps to keeping your hair manageable and healthy. Using a conditioner that will pump your hair with moisture and nutrients is key. I absolutely LOVE the DevaCurl Decadence Conditioner. Once a week I use DevaCurl’s Heaven In Hair deep conditioner. This conditioner will replenish your hair of moisture and also give you a portion boost. Apply a generous amount of conditioner from the ends of your hair and working your way up the hair shaft. Cover your hair with a shower cap to utilize your body heat to enhance the effects of the conditioner. Using these products will help keep frizz and static to a minimum.
Products – If you are a gel using curly girl try adding a styling cream to your regimen. This will add moisture to the hair leaving it soft and manageable. They are also a great line of defense against indoor heating and extream cold outdoor temps.
